My dear Lola,
If Santorini is known as one of the most romantic getaways in the whole Europe, Mykonos is home to the best party places in the old continent (leaving Ibiza aside).
Considering the Caribbean too far, the Maldives too expensive and French Polynesia… well, the two of them :)
When looking for a crystal water destination on a budget in Europe the best option turns to be: sailing the Cyclades… But which one to chose?
There’s a famous quote that claims, “When you don’t know which one to chose in between, get them all”.
While Mykonos madness and party clubs are always a good option, Santorini is the perfect place where to relax afterwards.
What to see and do in Mykonos?
1- Wander Mykonos whitewashed villages
Mykonos is easily recognized on photos thanks to its whitewashed villages, with its doors and windows painted on red and blue. It’s been said that blue colors belonged to fisherman houses, while the red one were assigned to farmers. It is a must to get lost between Chora meandering streets, its capital and biggest city, and which will make you feel as in a labyrinth.
2 – Visit Chora’s windmills
At the eastern part of the town, the famous and a million times photographed windmills can be found. This is also the best place where to get a city bird’s view.
3 – Colorful “Little Venice”
Another place not to be missed is “Little Venice”, as locals called. A little peninsula where colorful houses have been constructed right on the Sea’s edge with their balconies overhanging the water, as in the city of Venice, Italy.
4 – Ano Mera, the only inland village in Mykonos
Located at the island’s centre, Ano Mera becomes the only Mykonos inland village and surprisingly the second biggest one in population… and just because of it, It is already worth a visit. Moreover, when in Ano Mera don’t miss the pastel colored “Panagia Tourliani Monastery” dating from the 16th century.
But in the end, Mykonos is known as the most party island of the Greek Cyclades and when the sun goes down, everyone understands why.
Chill-out locals, beach bars and party clubs… They all turn the light down and the volume up.
Where to party?
Mykonos offers a big range of “night out” possibilities, check out the best ones:
Close to “Little Venice” and facing the Aegean Sea, in the very city centre of Chora; Semeli is the place to be when looking for a relaxing night, cocktail in hand and with wonderful views.
Located in one of the a thousand tiny streets, a two-floor music bar is preceded by a little terrace where to sit after all dancing or gather with other tourists.
For those looking for a beach party; Tropicana is their place. Starting the party right after midday, visitors can enjoy the music laying on their sun beds, follow the rhythm on the dance floor or from the crystal water, and get themselves a snack on its own little shop. Dancing on swimsuit and make up free on the beach makes it everyone favorite club.
At last, with a night style dress code and on the outskirts of Chora, Cavo Paradiso is the kind of discotheque that will make you feel in Ibiza. A large swimming pool, techno music and views from the top of the cliff, turns it into one of the biggest party clubs in Mykonos.
Have you ever been in Mykonos? What did you do and where did you party?
